End of The Earth: 1930 meets 2021 Storytelling for kids

End of The Earth: 1930 meets 2021 Storytelling for kids

Today I was thinking about the Storytelling for kids who were born between 1930-1940.Can you imagine what their life was like? Well the answer came from my Grandmother who was born in 1930 and is a robust 91 now. What she shared was so much of an eye opener that I have penned down a series of blogs with the heading ‘1930 meets 2021’. I will be posting here off and on, so watch this storytelling space.

My Grand Mom was 10 years old in 1940.She was very fascinated by the sun, moon and stars and often wondered how it would be to see them closer. She was home schooled along with 10 other girls of the huge joint family and among other things, had studied that Earth was round. What she could not understand just how though. As far as her eyes could see, it was flat.

So one day she made up her mind to see it for herself that, the earth was round. She coaxed her sister who was just a year younger, to go on mission discovery with her.

They talked the cook into making puris for them, because that is what picnic lunch meant back then. In a flask, he also gave them nimbu pani. Two oranges and two burfis, completed the meal pack.

It was 7 am in the morning when they left the house and walked to the orchard which was 2 kilometers away from their Palatial home.

The orchard had tall trees and the plan was to identify the tallest and climb it. Surely from the highest point, you could see the round earth. In anticipation of how beautiful it would be to see a curved earth, they started the hunt for the tallest tree.

The Great banyan tree was identified as the mission tree for it was tall, majestic, older than the rest and wise. How many stories it must have witnessed from its eyes. The journey to the top of the tree began.

They stopped for a break and sat side by side on a thick branch midway to the top, eating and chatting. Soon they resumed their climb. If anyone should wonder, climbing had been taught to them not in school but, in the University of life by their older siblings, between fun and stories.

As they started nearing the top, the excitement mounted, conversation stopped and focus increased. Kanwar could hear her heart pound so fast as if it was going to explode.

Kanwar being the elder one got the privilege to emerge first as she balanced herself in the V shaped crook of the uppermost branch and the trunk, standing and looking around. A minute later, Kajal emerged from the branch just below that one, standing in the same manner.

From where they stood, they could see acres and acres of tree laden land, green and gorgeous. It was a sight to behold and they quietly let it sink in. Kanwar was the first to realize that the earth still looked flat. She sighed without sadness and after singing a few songs, shouting a lot and teasing each other, they began the descent.

On their way back home, Kanwar was silent. Anyone who knew her well could watch her expression, think and tell that the germ of a new plan was already planted in her mind. After all, her mission had not been accomplished. So here is Storytelling for kids for people who were born in 1930-1940, for us it is indeed a new experience. Stories of 1930-1940, and stories in 21st century are different, though storytelling technique and narration depends on the storyteller. How do you tell your life story in your family? This is 21st century, and End of The Earth hasn’t yet happened. We are alive and kicking, and storytelling for kids is here to stay, we are waiting to hear your story!
